What I failed to guess was the timeline/causality for the contents.

And is it so wrong that I like Rory better in his current "personality" than in his original one?

Given what happened to Rory, why does the ring still exist? (Maybe simply because it was inside the TARDIS, but that seems a little convenient, since Amy lost her memory of him while she was inside it.)
